Boyd and CAAM Artistic Director Emily Edgington Andrews, present the powerful modern oratorio Alzheimer’s Stories by Robert S. Cohen and Herschel Garfein coupled with the uplifting cantata “I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes” by Adolphus Hailstork. Alzheimer’s Stories movingly gives a voice to the millions of Americans with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers by mimicking the progression of the disease through poignant real-life experiences. In “I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes,” Hailstork sets three well-known Psalms – 121, 13, and 23 – in a powerful conversation with each other. In the four movements, based on Chapter 20 in the Book of Jeremiah, the prophet cries out to God while experiencing myriad emotions, including anguish, betrayal, and disillusionment. In “Hallelujah!,” the final song inspired by Jeremiah 20:11-13, Jeremiah’s complaint transforms into praise as he reconciles that God is faithful to his promise to deliver the righteous.
